• Pool leak symptoms resulting from water loss

The most common reason for suspecting a pool leak is the observation of a larger than normal drop in water level. This water loss may not be obvious if your pool has an automatic fill device (that keeps the pool at a constant level), so keep your eyes open for other symptoms that may be leak related:

Increased chemical demands (to treat new water that is added to the pool)
    Increased water bills
Cracks in the deck resulting from settling earth
Unexplainable evidence of water outside the pool

If you notice any of these symptoms of a leaking pool, turn your automatic fill device off for 24 hours and monitor the water level.

Keep in mind that an uncovered pool will also lose water to evaporation. Evaporation is dependant on a variety of environmental conditions and can vary greatly from pool to pool and even from season to season. A simple way to account for evaporation and confirm a leak is to do a Bucket Test. The directions for the Bucket Test are listed below.

  • How can I check if my pool and/or spa is leaking?

    Bucket Test
The “Bucket Test” is a great test to run to check if you have a leak vs evaportation. Also the bucket test can be performed on heated pools

Fill the level of your pool to normal operating level (normally mid skimmer).
Fill a bucket with pool water to about one inch from top.
Place bucket on first or second step of pool.
Mark water level on inside of bucket.
Shut off pump and mark pool level on outside of bucket.
    Resume normal pump operation.
After 24 hours, compare the two levels. If the pool water (outside mark) goes down more than the inside water level, there is probably a leak.

In case of rain, repeat the test.

    Water Loss Test
The “Water Loss Test” is a fast and easy test to determine if your pool has a leak.
(This test does not work if the pool is heated. In this case use the “ Bucket Test”)
Fill the level of you pool to normal operating level (normally mid skimmer)
With either a pencil or piece of tape, mark the level of the pool (you can also mark the inside of the plastic pool skimmer with a pencil for a very accurate reading)
After a 24hr period, check the level of the pool. If the level has dropped a ¼” or more than you most likely have a leak (Pools can loose up to ¼” a day from evaporation)

    Meter Test
Make sure there is no water being used in or around the house.
Locate your water meter and write down the numbers on the meter. (The Water Meter is usually located in the front of the house in a covered box)
After 30 minutes to an hour have passed, check the numbers on the meter.
If the numbers have not changed then you do not have a pressurized leak. If the numbers do change, the next step is to shut off all the toilet water valves in the house and repeat steps 1-3.
If the numbers do not change at this point then your toilets my need to be serviced. If the numbers have changed, you’re most likely leaking and should look into getting a leak detection as soon as possible in order to prevent any further damage to your home.
